San Juan- In the archive photo, scenes from the earthquake. Read: A show will commemorate the 80th° anniversary of the earthquake of 1944 The earthquake of January 15, 1944 was the greatest tragedy that the Argentine people remember. About thousands of dead, of an even greater number of wounded (still uncertain data), and of the almost total destruction of a city. The effects also reached Córdoba, La Rioja, Mendoza and San Luis. Actually, the consequences of the earthquake were disproportionate compared to their intensity. They were endless seconds. The telluric movement was at 20.49 hours and reached 7.4 degrees magnitude on the Richter Scale and a maximum intensity of IX degrees on the modified Mercalli Scale. The epicenter was located 20 kilometers north of the city of San Juan, in the vicinity of the town of La Laja, in the department of Albardón.
