Corrientes.- In the photo taken on January 8, 2024, thousands of devotees in the city of Mercedes, came to honor the Gauchito Gil, whose death is today 146 years. Antonio Plutarco Cruz Mamerto Gil Núñez, better known as the Gauchito Gil, was born in Pay Ubre, a town near Mercedes, province of Corrientes around 1840. However, the location and dates are not fully confirmed. It is believed that he was a rural pawn recruited to fight in the War of the Triple Alliance and that he was also part of the militias that fought against the feds. Meanwhile, some versions relate that he had a love affair with a wealthy widow and that he had to escape from the brothers and local police by his romance. According to legend, the Gauchito Gil was visited by Ñandeyara, the Guarani god, who told him "Don’t want to shed blood on your fellows." and from there he left the army to become a vigilante who stole from the rich to give to the poor and healed the sick. However, he was captured and sentenced to death for his crimes, hung from a tree from his feet and beheaded. " His blood fell like a waterfall that the earth drank in a sip," says the legend.
