On September 5, 1997, in the city of Calcutta, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu died of various heart conditions at age 87. Recognized worldwide as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Catholic nun who founded the congregation of the Missionaries of Charity in that city in 1950, she ended up becoming an icon that gave her life to the service of the poor and sick. Teresa, awarded in 1979 with the Nobel Peace Prize, was beatified in 2003 by Pope John Paul II and then canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.
