Buenos Aires, Argentina - Some 200 students filled the esplanade of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) this Friday, April 19, 2024, in a massive public class to protest against the budget cuts to national universities and to warn that the faculty is also in a "critical situation", with the operation of only two of the six lifts installed and in the middle of renovation work on the marble slabs that line the inside of the building. The rectors of the country's public universities ratified Tuesday's march in defence of education and the university budget. They did so, in particular, in the context of a denial to the national government, which had communicated about an alleged consensus for an increase in the operating costs of higher education institutions. Ricardo Gelpi, rector of the UBA, says that the offer announced by the government must be dealt with by the National Interuniversity Council. "It was an offer from the Ministry of Education, which should be dealt with by the CIN. The government cannot decide on its own; the idea is to deactivate the march on Tuesday," said Gelpi. "They are trying to deactivate the march, but it is not suspended, categorically it is not suspended. It has been confirmed," he said.
